youth search

Youthsearch, is a research project commissioned by the Youth Council for Northern Ireland, co-ordinated by WheelWorks Youth Arts in partnership with the Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities (NICEM).

At the moment, there is no comprehensive youth specific contact list of minority ethnic groups in one place which interested parties can easily access, at the end of this groundbreaking research project - we aim to have a website database and or a publication, which will be of great benefit to all involved.

The aim is to include all relevant information such as contact details, activities, organisation and individual needs which would be useful to all: statutory and voluntary bodies, individuals and other community based organisations wishing to work with or find out about young people in minority ethnic groups.

As part of our research, we have consulted relevant organisations on the enclosed questionnaire which covers information requested about groups and information groups wish to share.

Please complete the questionnaire enclosed as thoroughly as possible and send it back to the email address below as soon as possible to ensure your group’s details are included on our database.

A cross section of groups will be contacted by telephone to arrange a telephone interview or face to face meeting if appropriate to verify details.

Speaking at the launch of the report  Stephen Lawrence's mother Doreen said:

"In some respects we are beginning to become a little complacent again. People think that we have had the Inquiry into Stephen's murder and so everything's fine, but it's not. There are lot of people still complaining about racist attacks. In Britain things have improved since the Mc Pherson report but there is still a long way to go. It is important that people of Northern Ireland look to learn the lesson of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry."

The Lawrence family lawyer Imran Khan said:

"The Lawrence case inspired many people who had otherwise given up hope of justice. In the past, victims of crime would never go to a lawyer. They would go to their MP or to a support agency, but never a lawyer. And even if they did, the lawyers would say, 'There's nothing we can do'. Now people expect justice from the law. But you also need a criminal justice system that is prepared to acknowledge and address institutional racism. From the evidence in this report, you haven't got that yet in  Northern Ireland. I think the lessons of Mc Pherson should be implemented here in full. "

NICEM Human Rights Conference 2007

Bills of Rights have played an important part in many societies emerging from conflict, both in the content of the final document and in the process by which it is produced. A Bill of Rights and Single Equality Bill for Northern Ireland are key to placing Human Rights and Equality at the cornerstone of peace building in Northern Ireland. Crucial to this is moving the discussion beyond the traditional ‘two-communities’ approach to discussing how we can use the Bill of Rights to build an inclusive society
