OCN Community Interpreting Level 4

We offer training in Community Interpreting accredited by the Open College Network Northern Ireland at level 4. This course is for bilingual people interested in working as community interpreters and those already working as community interpreters within an ethnic minority community organisation. Courses run at various times throughout the year throughout Northern Ireland. The training course runs for 15 full days and learners will submit a portfolio of assessments following the end of the course. The assessments will include work in English and the student’s mother tongue language.

Entry Criteria

 

  • Applicants must apply to be both on the register of interpreters and the training simultaneously.
  • Applicants must speak one of the following languages, along with English: Estonian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Hungarian, French, Lithuanian, Tetum, Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, Turkish, Latvian, Bengali, Fanti, Yoruba, Pashto, Mandarin, Malayalam and any African languages.
  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK and have a National Insurance Number.
  • Applicants must have resided in the UK/ROI for the three years in order to apply for security clearance. Security clearance is required for all applicants as a pre-requisite for entry to the course.
  • Applicants will need to demonstrate that they have good communication skills, spoken and written, both in English and another language and sufficient time to commit to this course of study. 
  • Before learners are finally accepted they must attend one day selection and induction session. This will involve language assessments, interview and overview of the course and organisation.

All classes are from 10am – 4:30pm, held at NICEM offices in Belfast.

NICEM other training programmes:

NICEM Equality and Diversity Training
 
Our training has been established to tackle the growth of racist based attitudes and
opinions, as well as to address issues of racism and prejudice in Northern Ireland.
 
The objectives of the anti-racism training and education seek to counter racism; create
self sustaining structures of anti-racism activity and cross community participation;
promote inter-ethnic participation; provide awareness of the value of cultural diversity
and of the dangers of social exclusion.
 
NICEM provides tailor-made anti-racism training and education programmes for
organisations such as statutory bodies, the voluntary sector, community groups, trade
unions, schools and educational establishments, youth groups, political parties, private
sector, business sector, religious groups etc.
 
Understanding Equality and Diversity is a two-day course, accredited at OCN Level 2
and that aims to explore the dynamics of racism and equality on an individual and
organisational level.
By the end of the course the participants should have a better understanding of the value
of equality and diversity, how to identify discrimination and oppression and be equipped
with the tools to challenge racism. The training will give the participants an opportunity to
examine how they interact with others from a diverse background and the opportunity to
examine the organisations they are involved with and how to better ensure equality in
policy and practice.
 
Key areas as a learner:
Better understanding of oppression, of discrimination in all its forms, of how to challenge
oppression and discrimination and of how to use policy and equality laws.
 
Two-day course with OCN accreditation: £ 75 per participant (minimum of 10 people)
 
One day course with no OCN accreditation: £ 50 per participant (minimum of 10 people)
 
Fees are all-inclusive and are based on a minimum of 10 people and a maximum of 20
people.
