NICEM Press Release
Friday 18 March 2011
NICEM calls for all ethnic minorities to vote for candidates sympathetic to its manifesto.
NICEM held a press conference today to launch its manifesto (full text below), calling for increased protection of the most vulnerable members of our society.
NICEM will now campaign for minority ethnic people to register to vote and encourage them to support candidates who have endorsed the principles of its manifesto.
Notably, these candidates will be committing to improve inequalities in healthcare, address racial bullying in schools and racist attacks, prevent the exploitation of migrant workers and support the creation of a social protection fund for those who are destitute or face destitution through no fault of their own.
Patrick Yu, NICEM's Executive Director, stated: "The upcoming Assembly elections present a unique opportunity for ethnic minorities to make their voices heard by voting for candidates who have the best interests of all members of Northern Ireland society at heart, and who genuinely wish to reduce social and economical inequalities, eradicate racial discrimination and promote diversity. We hope that 5 May will be a landmark in our campaign to achieve full equality and respect for diversity".
