Course Details

NICEM has secured funding from the Community Foundation NI, and the EU program for peace and reconciliation to deliver a training program for black and ethnic minority individuals. As part of our ongoing Ethnic Minorities Capacity Training and Development this the first time we are delivering this advocacy skills course in the Northwest area. The aim of the program is to empower local communities and the increase the effectiveness of access to health services for marginalized minority groups.

Advocacy involves helping people who are socially excluded to access the statutory services that they need and have a right to receive. With a focus on the area of health this course aims to help equip participants with the skills and knowledge to be an effective advocate.

Whilst not exclusive to ethnic minorities or bilingual individuals this training is aimed at supporting minority ethnic communities and those professionals currently working with them. Preference will be given to suitable individuals actively engaged in working to support minority ethnic communities in the North West .

The training program is structured into three elements:

Previous students messages and comments on the course

"This course focuses on the many different areas of health and mediation with particular emphasis on the structure of the health service in northern Ireland and how to assist people from an ethnic minority background who do not speak English, or even if they do, due to cultural differences, would not understand the system and would not be able to speak for themselves in medical situations.

This course has helped us greatly in terms of increasing our job opportunities or making our jobs more interesting and challenging, in terms of assisting our community, and most importantly in terms of personal development and assertiveness".
