Roma Demonstration Against the Belfast telegraph should not become a political football
NICEM Press Release
26 November 2010
Roma demonstration against the Belfast Telegraph should not become a political football.
Roma people selling the Belfast Telegraph in town are demonstrating today following the announcement that the work contract between their employment agent and the Belfast Telegraph would not be renewed.
These workers were brought into Belfast by a gangmaster who entered a dual contractual relationship with the Belfast Telegraph on the one hand, and with their employees (Roma people) on the other hand.
NICEM hopes that this commercial issue will be settled amicably between all contractual parties, in line with the Northern Ireland employment legislation.
As these Roma people, who are here legally, are soon to be unemployed and are unaware of their basic employment rights, we are happy to give them advice and support, and to assist them in finding alternative employment and/or claiming benefits for those who qualify under the law. We will ensure that Trade Unions are involved to guarantee a transparent and swift resolution of this issue.
