Achievements
NICEM has been working at a policy and operational level to provide a voice and vehicle for the BME communities in Northern Ireland for over 15 years, in this time we have had many notable achievements including;
Race Relations Legislation
We were part of a coalition of organisations that successfully lobbied for the extension of the Race Relations legislation to Northern Ireland in 1997. IN 2009 we successfully lobbied for a review of this legislation to bring us up to the same level of protection as given to the rest of the UK.
Racial Equality Strategy
We successfully lobbied for the production of a government strategy on race relations, we continue to lobby for the full implementation of this strategy.
Equality legislation
We have worked in partnership to establish and enforce the equality duties on public authorities as contained in section 75 of the Good Friday Agreement.
UN work
We have successfully lobbied UN committees on a variety of issues pertinent to the BME community in Northern Ireland, these committees have included; the committee on the Elimination of Racial discrimination, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women and the Committee of the Committee on Economic , Social and Cultural Rights
Establishment of the All Party Assembly Group on Ethnic Minority Communities
We successfully established this committee as an official committee of the Northern Ireland Assembly in 2008.
