Panel discussion with the Chair of the UN Committee on Racial Discrimination on recent Conclusion Observations of the UK State Report
NICEM welcomes the publication of the Conclusion Observations of the UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) on the UK State Report on 26 August 2016[1].
The Executive Director of NICEM, Mr. Patrick Yu, says that, “I am very please to see the outcomes, in particular the recommendations to our Executive Government, after our collective efforts in Geneva to convince the independent expert members of the CERD.
Mr. Yu further stated that “The CERD did not understand how complex of the sovereign state of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland. In my oral statement to the Committee on 3rd August I highlighted that fact that we have three devolved governments with different levels of powers on law and policy making in which one size to fit all recommendations could not have any effect to all the devolved administration. Now it is clear that any recommendations will direct to the specific devolved administration or UK as a whole, take for example immigration law and policy.”
NICEM is now organising a public event “Panel discussion with the Chair of the UN Committee on Racial Discrimination” to follow-up the Conclusion Observations of the UK State Report on Monday, 12th September at 12pm for 12:30pm at Room 115 of the Parliament Buildings.
Mr. Yu says that “We have lined up with Les Allamby, the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, and Michael Wardlow, the Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. We are waiting for the confirmation of a prominent MLA for this big event.”
Mr. Yu further says that, “The Chair of the UN Committee on Racial Discrimination, Ms. Anastasia Crickley, who is an Irish National, will have a private meeting with the leaders of the ethnic minority communities in Northern Ireland. The purpose of the meeting is to encourage BME communities to use international standard such as the UN Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination to tackle racial inequality and promote racial equality.”
